Greg Mashburn Bio-- from HVAC NEWS article
I’ve never “flipped a burger” or “bagged a grocery,” Mashburn proudly states. “There was just so much to learn in HVAC.”
Greg continued to work every school break and part time with E & W Heating and Air through 1983, when suddenly, as a student at the University of Georgia, he happened to notice he was the only one in class showing up with work boots and jeans. “I looked around and I was the only one coming to class with work clothes on" said Mashburn. So it was then, that Mashburn decided that perhaps the best way to work and go to school at the same time, would be to get into the HVACR supply business. Mashburn joined Coastal Supply Co., in Athens doing everything there was to do in branch operations. Bookkeeping, sales, special ordering, stocking, loading and unloading trucks. “I don’t know which was more hectic, being in the supply business or climbing in attics and under houses all day,” Mashburn remembers. Nonetheless, Mashburn learned more and more from the people he worked with and the customers he served. “Being in every phase of wholesale distribution was the best education I could have received.”
In 1985, Greg joined the Athens, Ga branch of C.C. Dickson Co., a southeastern wholesaler then based in Charlotte, NC. “Joining C.C. Dickson Co., was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” says Mashburn, “the staff at this branch, and all of the other branches, were long time employees that had so much experience from which to learn. There were guys there that had worked in refrigeration when ice tongs were used to carry blocks of ice!” Mashburn jokes. Greg worked everyday with people he considers “Legends” of the business. People such as Jack Borders, then regional director, Fred Brumley and Tell Blackwell at the corporate office, were not only legends in mechanical knowledge, but in customer service as well. “I learned so much from these fellows,” Mashburn says, “if my start in wholesale distribution was an education, then working with such knowledgeable people at C.C. Dickson Co. was “Graduate School.” Greg enjoyed the HVACR wholesale business and C.C. Dickson Co. so well that he turned it into a 21 year career, progressing as delivery, inside sales, branch manager in Marietta, Ga, and Warner Robins, Ga, and finally as an area manager covering Warner Robins, Ga, Macon, Ga, Columbus, Ga and for a short time Opelika, Al. “I’ve had the pleasure of serving customers all over Georgia, and parts of Alabama,” Mashburn proudly states, “I wouldn’t have changed a thing!”
Greg’s career took a twist in September 2006, when he resigned from C.C. Dickson Co. and teamed up with John Q. Bullard Associates Inc., in Atlanta, Ga as a Sales Representative. “I have always wondered what my life would be like after wholesale,” Mashburn says, “I am just thankful that I am still young and healthy enough to enjoy the change and the challenge.” John Q. Bullard Associates Inc. has served the engineering, design build, wholesale distribution and service industries with boilers, pumps, steam accessories, heat exchangers, special order coils of all types, tankless hot water heaters, controls, hydronic equipment and much more for over 40 years. “This side of the business has really broadened my work experience, and working with the principals of John Q. Bullard Associates has been a pleasure,” Mashburn explains, “in addition to calling on some of my old customers with JQBAI products, I now have more contacts than ever before in HVACR, Industrial sales and in the Plumbing industry.”
Beginning in 2008, Greg Mashburn created Skyway Sales and Marketing Co. Skyway Sales and Marketing will continue to represent John Q. Bullard Associates as an independent sales representative, but will pick up other non-conflicting lines as well to represent. “I love this industry,” Mashburn says, “it feeds my desire to be competitive, hard working and creative while being the very best I can be in customer service. It is my desire to leave a legacy, just as my “professors” have done before me in knowledge and sales. I know there are emails, websites, fax machines, etc. out there that make selling and buying so convenient these days, but the bottom line is this-- people need support for what they do to earn a living, and face to face contact is still the best way to achieve growth and customer service in business.”
